Tom Siegenthaler, Branch Manager Operations Mobile, Bern

Who are you in a few words?

My name is Tom Siegenthaler, I’m 55 years old. I grew up and still live in the Bernese Oberland. I’m married and the father of two sons. I trained as a chef and gastronome, but I’ve been working in the security field for nearly 26 years – 18 of them at Protectas.

What motivated you to join Protectas?

I wanted to move from a small company to a larger organisation in order to access more professional development opportunities.

Can you tell us about your beginnings at Protectas?

I started in 2000, working on a mandate for the US Embassy. After that, I helped develop patrol, intervention, protection and event services in the Bern–Biel–Solothurn–Aargau region.

I’ve both received and delivered many training courses, and I’ve learned a lot about different types of security services.

And today, what are your responsibilities?

I’m currently Deputy Branch Manager Operations for mobile patrols. I also serve as operational manager and fleet manager for the region. In addition, I’m responsible for planning and office infrastructure in Bern, Solothurn and Biel, among other tasks.

What do you enjoy most about your job?

The diversity of tasks. Over the years, I’ve had the chance to meet people from very different backgrounds – politics, business, entertainment...

I particularly enjoy passing on my knowledge to help protect the community.

What’s your biggest challenge and how do you manage it?

Finding qualified and motivated staff – and then knowing how to support, retain and help them grow.

Which value resonates with you most and why? (Integrity, Vigilance, Helpfulness)

Honestly, all three. Because if one is missing, the outcome will never meet expectations.

What advice would you give to women who want to work in the security field?

Go for it! In the security sector, women can often have an even greater impact than men – especially when it comes to de-escalating tense situations.
